New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos announced that the 2015 hunting season was one of the safest in state history.

HVNN reports that there were no hunting fatalities in New York state in 2015. This marks  the first year without a hunting-related shooting fatality since record keeping began in the mid 1950s.

According to HVNN, DEC’s 2015 Hunting Safety Statistics report says that there were only twenty three hunting incidents last year, with ten of those incidents being self-inflicted and thirteen two-party incidents. The twenty three incidents marks the third lowest number on record.

Many credit the declining hunting accidents to the DEC’s volunteer instructors.
