A committee is seeking a $50,000 raise for New York State lawmakers by 2021.

The New York Times reports that a special committee in New York State Congress is trying to get a $50,000 raise for state lawmakers by 2021. A four-person committee proposed that all 213 lawmakers in New York State get a major raise within the next 3 years.

Currently, New York lawmakers make $79,500 annually, without perks or stipends included. According to The New York Times, they have had the same salary for 20 years.

If the plan goes through, New York State lawmakers will get a $30,500 raise next year, bringing their salary to $110,000, according to The New York Times. Then in 2020, state lawmakers will get a raise of $10,000, putting their salary at $120,000. Finally, New York State lawmakers will get another $10,000 raise pushing their salary to $130,000.

According to the New York State Department of Labor, the average weekly wage is $1,357.11, equalling $70,569.72 annually. In 2017, the median salary for people in the United States was$44,564, according to Balance Careers.

If the raise is finalized, a report is expected on Monday, December 10, 2018, according to The New York Times.
