Drones have become a hot topic of debate with some voicing concerns over safety and privacy. Now one county in New York state has restricted their use. The Times Herald Record reports that lawmakers in Suffolk County voted 15-2 to restrict camera-bearing drone use by requiring permits to fly them over certain areas and barring flights above beaches in the summer.

The new measure will ban flights over any Suffolk county facility without the authorization from public works. Flights over county parks without a permit from the parks department have also been banned. Critics are already blasting the new law as unconstitutional and want to know how the measure will be enforced. The county executive has 30 days to sign or veto the bill.

Rockland County has proposed similar restrictions, stating that drones would be limited to the user’s private property, as well as prohibiting the use of drones within 100 feet of the jail, schools, government buildings, or places of worship. New York City councils have also considered bans.
