In a meeting Tuesday, the Ulster County Legislature approved plans for more than 10 additional miles of Hudson Valley Rail Trail.

Resolution 187 passed with strong support Tuesday night in Woodstock. According to a press release from Friends of the Catskill Mountain Rail Trail, the move paves way for the detailed planning and design of the Ashokan Reservoir Recreational Trail.

This comes after 15 months of negotiation between Ulster County Executive Mike Hein, and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. The Ashokan Reservoir is one of the largest suppliers of drinking water to NYC. The trail will be open to the public for the first time in more than 100 years. Access will be year round and free, no permits required.

Here's a video assembled with some stunning footage of area of the Ashokan Reservoir. When this project opens to the public, it'll be a great resource for people in the Hudson Valley.
