Starting today a new law has made it illegal to speed past garbage trucks here in the Hudson Valley.

In the Hudson Valley there's already a law that forces drivers to move over when there is a police or emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the road. That law was expanded over the summer to include volunteer firefighters. Now you can add garbage trucks to the list.

Lawmakers proposed the change to the law because of recent fatal accidents involving sanitation workers. Drivers now have to slow down when passing garbage trucks and, if they are on a multi-lane road, move over when passing them if it is safe to do so.

Failure to safely pass garbage trucks could result in fines and even jail time. The amendment to New York State's "Move Over" law goes into effect on November 1.
