83 people were arrested during protests in New York City last night after a grand jury in Staten Island declined to indict officers involved in the death of Eric Garner. Some protesters blocked trafficin the Lincoln Tunnel and on the Brooklyn Bridge. Attorney General Eric Holder has stated that the Justice Department will conduct a civil rights investigation in the matter. Garner died over the summer after being placed in an apparent chock hold by Officer David Pantaleo. Pantaleo and other officers approached Garner after he had broken up a fight in front of a beauty shop. Garner was known in the area for selling illegal cigarettes (or loosies), and when searched and placed under arrest, resisted, which eventually lead to the fatal confrontation.
