The Millbrook Blazers are used to winning regular season games, although not usually by a 64-0 score.  That was the final Friday night as Millbrook completely shut down a young Pine Plains team at the Millbrook Athletic Complex.

On a perfect football night with a chill in the air, the Blazers didn’t waste any time warming up the home fans.  On the very first play from scrimmage, senior quarterback Reggie Colley connected with senior Michael Docarmo for a 65-yard touchdown down the right sideline.  The 2-point conversion gave Millbrook a quick 8-0 lead before many fans had even settled in.

“We practiced throwing a lot this week and we usually don’t throw at all,” said Millbrook Head Coach Sean Keenan. “We put a lot of emphasis on it this week and I think we caught them off guard a little bit.  They weren’t expecting it and Reggie made a nice throw to Michael, who made a great catch to get things rolling for us.”

After holding the Bombers on their first offensive possession, Delvin Wood took the punt and darted back 60 yards for another quick touchdown, giving the Blazers a 16-0 lead.

Later in the first quarter, the Millbrook swarming defense brought down Pine Plains quarterback Kyle Barton in the end zone for a safety, increasing the Millbrook advantage to 18-0.

Two more rushing touchdowns in the quarter – by Delvin Wood and Leif Christensen – extended the Blazers’ commanding lead to 32-0.  While the offense seemed unstoppable, the defense was dominating.

“Both sides of the ball, our whole team, “ Coach Keenan said, when asked which unit impressed him most in the game. “We’ve been here for eight years now, Coach (Lou) Portaro,  myself and Coach (Jeffrey) Barnes.  This is the best group of kids we’ve ever had.  I don’t know if this is the best team we’ve ever had, but this is the best group of kids.  They work hard, they are committed.  It’s a pleasure to coach these kids.”

The pleasure continued in the second quarter as Millbrook added a 55-yard touchdown run by Delvin Wood, as the sophomore standout barreled through five tacklers en route to the end zone.  On their next drive, Michael Docarmo broke free for a 62-yard touchdown scamper.  Sophomore Cody Homa took a toss and scurried in from 5 yards out, capping the first half and giving the Blazers a 51-0 halftime lead.

“I give Pine Plains a lot of credit, “ said Keenan. “They played hard until the last play.  There was no nonsense.  They played hard and with class, and coach (Tom Povall) does a great job up there.”

Keenan rested many of the Millbrook regulars during the second half, as they continued their trademark running attack.  Cody Homa scored on a 30-yard touchdown run, and sophomore Peter Blair reached the end zone from 14 yards out.

Final Score Millbrook 64, Pine Plains 0.  For a Blazers team that went 8-0 during last year’s regular season, only to be sent home by James O’Neill in the Section 9 Class C semifinals, the 3-0 start must be kept in perspective.

“We look one game at a time,” said Keenan.  “We learned our lesson last year.”
