Mike Piazza is already heading for Cooperstown and now the former Major League star is going to have his Number 31 retired by the New York Mets.

The ceremony will take place during s special "Mike Piazza Weekend" before the Saturday, July 30 game against the Colorado Rockies.

Piazza said in a statement released by the team

It is such a tremendous honor to have my number retired alongside the great Tom Seaver. My time as a Met was truly special and I want to thank Fred (Wilpon), Saul (Katz), Jeff (Wilpon) and the entire organization for this incredible gesture.

 

Piazza, the greatest hitting catcher of all time, hit 427 home runs overall in a 16-year career. Piazza spent eight years with the Mets and led them to the 2000 World Series.
