Around 600 employees at the Gap Distribution Center in Fishkill are out of work following Monday’s massive fire. The investigation is ongoing. Arson may be a factor.

Tuesday, employees were told not to come into work following the fire. CBS reports employees who missed out on work will be paid. Officials are trying to figure out if operations can temporarily be moved to another location.

The fire began around 10:30 p.m. Monday. Firefighters from Dutchess, Putnam, and Ulster Counties spent around 6 hours putting out the six-alarm blaze and hotspots.

“An aggressive interior attack was made by firefighters who were driven out by deteriorating conditions,” Fishkill Fire Chief Brandon Knapp said during a press conference. “A transition to a defensive attack was made.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This photo, which is trending on social media, may provide clues as to how the fire started. The photo shows boxes on shelves up in flames in what appears to be a Gap warehouse. If the photo is real, arson could be a major factor in the fire.

A State Police source told Hudson Valley Post an arson investigation is underway.

State Police would not comment on the photo. Two people who said they are firefighters commented on the photo post stating that authorities are aware of the picture and are investigating.

Around 100 Gap employees were inside the building at the time of the fire. They were all evacuated with no reported injuries.

“One firefighter sustained a minor injury,” Knapp said.

On Twitter, Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro tweeted that the damage to the Gap warehouse is $1 million. Adding one-third of the million square foot building is damaged.

An employee who was in the building when the fire began spoke to WPDH a few hours after the fire.

We will continue to update the story as more information becomes available.
