If outgoing Mayor John Tkazyik has his way, he road that leads to the Mid Hudson Civic Center would no longer be a one-way street.

Market Street, which connects the North and Southbound arterials in the City of Poughkeepsie is an extremely popular road. On it resides not only the Bardavon, Mid Hudson Civic Center and Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel, but it's also the address of many county services, The Dutchess courthouse and other busy offices.

Market Street is one-way, causing Southbound traffic to loop around the arterial in order to reach many destinations. Mid Hudson News reports that the mayor believes opening traffic in both directions would make it easier to get around the city and also open up much-needed parking spaces.

The problem with the plan is that it's very expensive. Estimates show that infrastructure improvements to make the switch possible could cost upwards of $10 Million, money that the City of Poughkeepsie can't spare. One would think that some line painting and new road signs wouldn't be that expensive, but underground water mains and other improvements would need to be made in order for it to happen.

So it looks like, for now, those traveling on the Westbound arterial or Main Street will have to continue to make three left turns instead of just one when traveling to their destination on Market Street.
