A former cancer patient has become the first man to receive a penis transplant in the U.S. according to ABC News.

Surgeons performed the 15 hour procedure on 64 yr old Thomas Manning of Halifax, Massachusetts at Massachusetts General Hospital. Manning had part of his penis removed after a cancer diagnosis. The new organ came from a deceased donor.

Manning issued a statement thanking the medical team and donor's family. He said "Today I begin a new chapter of my life with personal hope for others who have suffered grnital injuries. In sharing this success with you,it's my hope we can usher in a bright future with this type of transplantation." Dr. Curtis Cetrulo, a plastic surgeon that helped with the operation said "We hope to open this up to other patient populations including wounded warriors." There is hope the operation could help many men in the U.S. including thousands with genital injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan.
