Reports say a veteran of the Kingston police department shot an 18-year-old male in the abdomen near the Kingston Plaza early Friday morning after the teen allegedly displayed a BB gun.

According to the Daily Freeman, Officer Steven Fellows shot Kingston resident Alex Jeffries after the teen allegedly brandished a weapon near the scene of a reported burglary. Police say Jeffries was shot once in the abdomen as he was fleeing from a Chase Bank.

Jeffries reportedly suffered a non-life-threatening wound and is listed in stable condition after being treated at Albany Medical Center. Jeffries' grandfather told the Daily Freeman that Alex was at the ATM to withdraw money to purchase a pizza when police arrived and shot him. The grandfather was quoted as saying

Why he had a BB gun I don’t know... He did not point a pistol at anybody. The [officer] just got out of the car and shot him. ... If they see a weapon, they just shoot to kill. They don’t try to disarm a person.

Officer Fellows, a 14-year veteran of the Kingston Police Department, has been taken off of the street while the incident is being investigated. The department released this follow up:
