Local Police to Participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Police from the Hudson Valley say they are planning on participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The New Paltz Police Department in conjunction with the Greater New Paltz Community Partnership announced the department will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day being held on Saturday, April 30, 2016.

The initiative addresses a growing public health and safety concern. New Paltz Police say, prescription drugs are now the second most abused category of drugs in the United States.

Officials say the majority of abused prescription drugs are acquired from medicine cabinets of friends and family. Due to this discovery, local police are now focusing on the proper disposal of left over and unneeded prescriptions.

Anyone wishing to discard prescription medications can do so using the “Med Return Box” located in the front lobby of the New Paltz Police Department.

On their Facebook page, the Monroe Police Department announced they are also taking part in the program. The public is encouraged to drop off any unused, unwanted and expired medication at the Monroe Police Department.

Participation in the drug drop off program is anonymous and no questions will be asked.
