A Hudson Valley parent says their child's candy was tampered with, and police are now investigating.

According to Mid Hudson News, it's believed that the candy was distributed at the Poughkeepsie Galleria in the Town of Poughkeepsie on Saturday afternoon. A parent alerted the police after they say they discovered that the candy had been tampered with. The child was participating in the mall's annual trick-or-treating promotion. Children are invited to visit designated stores throughout the Galleria to receive candy before walking in a Halloween costume parade.

Police did not reveal the source of the alleged tampering, but Mid Hudson News says a Facebook posting indicates that the parent is claiming a pill was found inside the candy. We spoke to Captain John Watterson from the Dutchess County Sheriff's office on Friday and he told us that it's very rare to see a case like this. Watterson said,

There is the possibility that there can be problems with the candy, but honestly we haven't seen that. I can't remember the last time that I saw that.

If anyone has information about this incident, or believe that they have received suspicious candy at the Poughkeepsie Galleria, the Poughkeepsie Town Police urges you to call them at (845) 485-3666.
