A Washingtonville man drowned this weekend while vacationing in Puerto Rico, according to News 12 Hudson Valley.

Joe Rosario was taken under by a riptide in the waters of Puerto Rico. He jumped in to assist his 12-year-old son and his two friends. After getting the kids to safety, he was caught in the riptide.

His body was recovered by the coast guard Monday morning, not far from where he rescued the three children, according to the report.

Rosario was a retired NYPD officer, and longtime little league coach. He was a beloved member of his community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
