The last known remaining search and rescue dog who worked at Ground Zero after the 9/11 terrorists attacks, returned to the WTC site yesterday to mark the 13th anniversary  of that tragic day. Bretagne, a 15 year old golden retriever from Texas, returned with her owner, Denise Corliss, for the first time since 2001. Bretagne, along with many other search and rescue dogs, would spend countless hours...not only searching the tons of wreckage, but would also come to help their human emergency responder counterparts cope with the traumatic events of Sept 11th.

Corliss brought home the tawny puppy in 1999 and immediately began training her for search dog duties. Especially astute dog-handler pairs are selected to help federal teams during national emergencies.

In 2000, the two made it into the ranks of Texas Task Force 1, meaning they were officially cleared for national disaster duty.

During the 9/11 mission, the then-2-year-old Bretagne worked 12-hour days alongside about 300 other pooches.

Bretagne is now retired from search and rescue, however she stills works as a service dog. She teravels to a number elementary schools in Texas to help special needs children. Bretagne and owner Corliss will soon travel to Beverly Hills for the American Humane Association's annual Hero Dog Awards ceremony.
