A Poughkeepsie man remains missing after he and his fiancee capsized in the Hudson River Sunday evening.

Poughkeepsie residents Angelika Graswald and Vincent Viafore were kayaking in the Hudson near Cornwall when rough water and strong winds caused Viafore's kayak to overturn, according to a press release from the New York State Police. Viafore wasn't wearing a life preserver when he capsized, police said.

Graswald called 911 and tried to help Viafore, who wan't able to return to his kayak. Graswald fell out of her own kayak during the rescue attempt. She was discovered and pulled out of the water by a passing boater, the NYSP reported.

Both kayaks were recovered but Viafore remained missing when police suspended search operations Sunday evening.

Graswald was treated for hypothermia at a local hospital and released.

The Hudson River search was the second outdoor rescue attempt in Cornwall Sunday evening. A woman suffered a panic attempt on Storm King Mountain, requiring firefighters to rappel down the mountain near Route 218 and lift her up in a basket, according to a Times-Herald Record report.
