According to the FDA, World Variety Produce, Inc. of Los Angeles, CA is voluntarily recalling Italian Pine Nuts 2 oz and 3 oz, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Even those with healthy immune systems, Salmonella can have some significant effects such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. According to the FDA, in rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

It's nothing to mess around with. The recalled pine nuts were sold under two names, Melissa's Italian Pine Nuts and Wegmans Italian Classics Pine Nuts. Click here for specific package information involved in this recall.
