Mere months after rolling out a browser-based video game, Iron Maiden have announced plans for Legacy of the Beast, a new "epic free-to-play mobile role playing game, set in an "expansive universe" inspired by the band's music.

The new game, which is scheduled for a summer debut, allows players to battle as the band's mascot, Eddie, "in his many guises across worlds inspired by the rich lore and music of Iron Maiden." The storyline finds Eddie after his soul has been shattered by a mysterious force, and puts players on a quest to "Travel through time and space collecting the pieces as you encounter a cast of dramatic and engaging characters."

Those travels, naturally, are set to songs selected from across the band's catalog, including previously unreleased live recordings that have been specially adapted for the game soundtrack under the supervision of founder Steve Harris.

"We always thought Maiden’s music and imagery with Eddie could be perfect for gaming and it's something we have been looking at doing again since Ed Hunter in 1999," said Harris. "Now in 2016, it can all be done on a smartphone, which makes it even more accessible for all our fans and also all the gamers out there."

"As a lifelong fan, I have always thought that Maiden’s music, lyrics and cast of characters would provide the perfect basis for a deep RPG experience," added James Hursthouse, CEO of developer Roadhouse Interactive. "With this game we’re creating an outstanding RPG that will appeal to all mobile gamers, including those discovering Maiden for the first time."
