I grew up in the Newburgh area in the 1970s.  Sure, I lived in a little suburban neighborhood in New Windsor, but I went to school, shopped, dined, did just about everything in Newburgh,  Back then New Windsor didn't even have it's own zip code.  We shared one with Newburgh.

Having grown up in Newburgh back then, I saw a lot of racial tension and prejudice, inner city building deterioration, a fair amount of crime, and some tough financial times for the city, too.  I'll tell you what else I saw...

A huge majestic river.  Everyday of my life.  I was surrounded by mountains...big, beautiful mountains everywhere I looked.  I saw great city neighborhoods with beautiful old buildings, and people looking out for each other.  I saw the Newburgh Waterfront become one of best places in the area to dine and enjoy time with friends.

The winters were pretty rough, but I have great memories of sledding down Epiphany Hill, and then going to The Vails Gate Diner afterwards for a cup of hot chocolate with extra whipped cream.  Skating at The Rec, and pizza at The Grandstand. And I made some of the best friends of my life in Newburgh.  Friendships that still are strong today.

Say what you will about Newburgh, but I'm proud to say I grew up there.
