It's a first for New York State, as a local town decides to sell off its street signs for $30 each. Why would they do this?

The Town of Walkill recently adopted the new motto, "Where Happy Babies Are Born." Along with the motto, the town has also created a new logo. According to Time Warner Cable News, that means the old signs have to go.

Money collected from the sale of street signs will go towards creating the new ones. But that's not the only reason they're doing it. Town Supervisor Dan Depew told Time Warner,

It's more of a personal thing. That they know that they were able to do that. It's a story that you'll be able to tell your kids. Now where did you get that sign from?  Well, it's a neat thing.  One day they changed all the signs in the town and I was able to be involved in that.

Requests for signs are on a first come, first served basis. When an old, green sign is purchased it will be replaced with a new, brown one and delivered to the buyer within 15 days.

If you're interested in purchasing one you can make your request on the Town of Walkill's website.  The site reminds potential customers that the sale is just for town signs. County, state and private road signs are not available.
