A local high school student stopped by The Boris & Robyn Show to discuss his charity that pays off layaway bills for Hudson Valley residents in need.

Tom Giordano made news this month when his organization, Pay Away The Layaway, surprised shoppers at Wal-Mart in Wallkill by paying for their items that were on layaway.  The charity was started by a former Goshen High School student in 2011 and Giordano has continued to collect money throughout the school year to continue helping Hudson Valley residents who could use a boost during the holidays.

According to Goshen High School Principal, Kurtis Kotes, the look on the recipients faces shows how much of a difference a few extra dollars can help during this time of year. One woman who found out that her items were paid for was so excited that the money she saved could now be used to purchase much needed groceries.

For those who worry where donation dollars go, those behind Pay Away The Layaway say that every dollar goes to pay off layaway items. And not just any items are eligible. Organization members choose specific items that they know are needed for children this time of year, so you won't see giant flat screen TVs being paid for.  Instead, the group has paid for children's car seats, clothing and Christmas toys.
