You better think twice before testing out the magic markers at this Hudson Valley Pharmacy.

A sign posted at the Rite-Aid in Wappingers Falls tells a story of just how frustrated workers must be at cleaning up magic markers drawings. The message, found on a shelf that holds loose Sharpies, threatens police action and stiff penalties for customers who decide to doodle.

One could argue that displaying loose, unpackaged Sharpies is entrapment. Who could resist twisting one open and giving it a try? And why sell them that way in the first place? If an open permanent marker just happens to make a mess isn't that on the store that sells it for leaving them so temptingly accessible? The sign certainly does its job, though. Just the thought of law enforcement standing by, waiting for an emergency call from Rite-Aid security is enough for me to steer clear of any Sharpie-related entanglements.

Honestly, we're really curious to find out exactly how things would go down if someone actually did crack open a Sharpie and take it to the shelves. Would the perp be detained by staff while the police raced to the store with sirens blazing? And just how stiff of a fine would one have to pay for testing out a pen? Also, if this offense requires police involvement, what happens to anyone found reading through the magazines or squeezing the Charmin? These are all questions this law-abiding citizen is not prepared to find out the answers to.  But I'll certainly keep wondering about them every time I walk down the stationery aisle.

Of course, we may not be in this mess at all if Rite-Aid just left out a pad of paper for people to try the pens out on. But then again, I'm no expert on the inner-workings of the criminal mind.
