Police say the Hudson Valley is in a dangerous situation because of someone transmitting over frequencies that are supposed to be used by first responders.

According to Time Warner News, Orange County first responders have reported receiving messages over their walkie talkies that are originating from an unknown source. While the interference has been reported by Orange County authorities, surrounding communities could also be affected if the mystery broadcaster moves or increases the power of their signal.

A recording of a sample message seems to indicate that it is originating from an environmental group demanding "clean power now." Pirate radio transmissions are not new to the Hudson Valley, but this one is especially concerning because police say it may put lives at risk. If officers' communications are blocked or jammed they fear it could delay response times and cause confusion during emergency situations.

The FCC has rules governing who can and cannot broadcast radio transmissions. Through the years WPDH has seen its own share of pirate stations pop up and interfere with our signal. Although the practice is against the law, it is sometimes difficult to locate the offender and bring legal action against them. But because this case involves public safety there may be more motivation for the FCC to get involved and find whomever is responsible.

A meeting was scheduled for Tuesday with Orange County emergency officials to find a solution to the problem.
