The cat's out of the bag: Lady Gaga is engaged. And you can thank a local newspaper for breaking the news.

US Weekly credits the Times Herald Record for leaking the big news. How did a local paper wind up scooping the likes of TMZ? Barry Lewis, the Executive Editor for the Times Herald Record was there when it happened.

According to the Record, Lewis was dining on Valentine's day at Joanne Trattoria in Manhattan, an Italian restaurant owned by Lady Gaga's parents. Gaga and her long time boyfriend, actor Taylor Kinney, entered the restaurant and made the big announcement.

Barry Lewis posted the whole tale on the Record's website this morning and now the story has gone national.  Lewis tells it like this:

I was finishing off my plate of spaghetti and meatballs, when my wife Bonnie, enjoying a seafood special, noticed a pretty woman sporting platinum blond hair... I heard the singer say "it was time" as she flashed the ring around. Family members said the pair had been going out for about four years.

Lewis said that he and his wife both offered congratulations as the couple left the restaurant and then ordered some coffee. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
