A Hudson Valley man who crashed a stolen car while the vehicle’s owner was clinging to the car, severely injuring her, pleaded guilty.

On Friday in Orange County Court, 26-year-old Alan Alberto Newburgh pleaded guilty to first-degree assault for severely injured a woman during a carjacking on Dec. 13, 2016.

Alberto admitted that he stole a car at knifepoint from a woman and stabbed the woman while trying to get away. He confessed that he drove the stolen car in the City of Newburgh as the woman clung to the car.

While fleeing, Alberto narrowly missed hitting a City of Newburgh Police Officer who was on foot patrol. With the woman still clinging to the car, Alberto lost control of the car, crashed into a building and flipped over.

As a result of the crash, Alberto was pinned in the driver’s seat and the woman was crushed under the car.

The victim’s injuries included broken hips, legs, feet and knees which required her to undergo at least five surgeries, officials say.

“This type of senseless violence deserves the severest of penalties,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said. “A law-abiding citizen suffered catastrophic injuries due to this defendant’s attempt to steal a car from what he hoped was an easy target.”

Alberto is scheduled to be sentenced on June 8. At the time Alberto pleaded guilty, the District Attorney’s Office announced that they would be seeking an 18 year prison sentence on the case.
