A Hudson Valley man who gruesomely beat two men with a padlock and chain was found guilty.

On Tuesday in Orange County Court, a jury trial found 29-year-old Carlos Melendez of Newburgh guilty of assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

In the early hours of May 20, 2017, Melendez hit two men in the City of Newburgh with a padlock and chain in the head.

One man suffered life-threatening serious physical injuries, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

“The evidence in this case supported the jury’s verdict that this defendant intended on causing serious physical injury to at least one of his victims,” District Attorney David Hoovler said in a press release. “This defendant’s conduct could easily have resulted in the loss of life and is deserving of a lengthy sentence of incarceration.”

Melendez faces 26 to 29 years in prison when sentenced in February.
