A Hudson Valley man is behind bars for selling drugs that lead to the deaths of a local couple.

On Monday, 29-year-old Jacob Ebel of Niverville was arraigned on charges that he distributed heroin and fentanyl that caused two overdose deaths in Columbia County in July 2016.

According to the indictment, on July 3, 2016, Ebel sold heroin and fentanyl to someone who died after taking the drugs. Between July 18 and July 23, Ebel sold heroin and fentanyl to the spouse of the first victim. The spouse took the drugs and also died as a result.

Ebel was also charged with possessing heroin and fentanyl with the intent to distribute them and conspiring to possess and distribute heroin and fentanyl.

Ebel has been in custody since July 26, 2016, when he was arrested following a drug raid by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police. Ebel was allegedly found with over $5,000 worth of heroin.

If convicted of all charges, Ebel would face at least 20 years to life in prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 3 years to life.
