A man was pulled over in Red Hook and ended up with more than a moving violation.

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, James "JJ" Stagias, 27, of Elizaville, was found with 48 bags of heroin following a routine traffic stop in the Town of Red Hook on Thursday evening. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell.

Stagias' passenger, Brad Hapeman, 41, of Saugerties, was charged with possession of marijuana during the stop, according to the Town of Red Hook Police Department's Facebook page. Stagias was arraigned and was sent to jail on $25,000 bail. Hapeman was processed and released, according to the police department's post.

The Hudson Valley's problems with heroin have become big news over the past year or so, with major news outlets documenting not only the phenomenon of the sudden influx of drugs in the community but also the devastating effects they've had.
