Vincent Viafore died in the cold water of the Hudson River. The Poughkeepsie man’s death while kayaking near Cornwall-on-the-Hudson with his fiancée Angelika Graswald on April 19 was not only tragic: according to New York State Police, it was murder.

The suspect Angelika Graswald made statements that implicated her.

Police charged Graswald, 35, of Poughkeepsie, with second-degree murder in connection with 46-year-old Viafore’s death, the New York State Police announced in a press conference at Troop F headquarters in Middletown on Thursday. Viafore's body has not been recovered and police are asking boaters, hikers, and fisherman to be on the look out in or near the river.

"Angelika Graswald has been charged with second-degree murder and intent to murder. It's a Class A-1 Felony punishable by 15 years to 25 years to life. I intend to bring the case to a grand jury," Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said.

Graswald told authorities that she and Viafore were kayaking in the Hudson around 7:30PM on April 19 when his vessel overturned in choppy water. Graswald said she attempted to rescue Viafore when she fell out of her own kayak. She was later recovered by a passing boat and treated at a local hospital for mild hypothermia, police said.

"The suspect Angelika Graswald made statements that implicated her," New York State Police Major Patrick J Regan said.

Graswald's Facebook page shows numerous photos of the couple in happier times. She took to social media in the days after Viafore went missing to thank friends and family for their support.

"I have never felt more grateful in my life as I do now... The most sincere thanks to everyone Vince and I know... and to those we don't as well!!!" Graswald wrote in an April 22 status update on Facebook.

A video posted on Graswald's Facebook page on Wednesday morning shows a vehicle driving to the Cornwall waterfront and remarking on the time of 9:22AM on the clock. "9/22 is the day that we met," a voice--presumably Graswald's-- said.
