Imagine being woken up to the sound of your neighbor's home blowing to smithereens?

That's exactly what happened Monday morning as the Times Herald is reporting that an empty cottage in Wallkill exploded.

Firefighters arrived to find the collapsed remains of the cottage.

Some neighbors are saying that the smell of propane was reported Saturday so that may very well be the culprit here. A propane supplier was contacted by Sunday. They were supposed to do a check-up by 9 a.m. Monday morning, but that obviously never happened because there would have been nothing left but a pile of rubble by the time they got there.

Two men were renting the cottage but fortunately they weren't home at the time. One neighbor says their names are Bill and Will, so at least that's easy to remember.

Neighbors reported a loud boom that shook walls and knocked pictures off their frames. One woman in the neighborhood thought it was an earthquake.

The Orange County neighborhood was once a bungalow colony that was later converted to year round homes.

While no humans were hurt during that blast, at least one of the cats from the home is unaccounted for.
