We can certainly forgive Hudson Valley residents who may be completely confused by the Mid Hudson Bridge.

This month the bridge is turning purple again, but this time it's for a completely different reason than last month when the span also turned purple.

The Mid Hudson Bridge is equipped with state of the art LED lights that can change color and create some spectacular patterns with the click of a button. The Bridge Authority frequently changes colors on the bridge to correspond with certain charities and awareness campaigns.

In October the bridge turned purple to raise awareness for domestic violence. Many other iconic buildings in New York, like the Empire State Building, also changed their lights to purple to bring attention to the cause.

In November the bridge is turning purple again, but this time it's to raise awareness for epilepsy. That's right, it's national Epilepsy Awareness Month and their color also happens to be purple.

If that's not confusing enough, the ribbons for awareness website lists 31 different charities and diseases that use the color purple to raise awareness for their cause.

They are:

  • ADD
  • ADHD
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Animal Abuse
  • Anit-Violence
  • Arnold Chiari Malformation
  • Chronic Pain
  • Colitis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Domestic Violence
  • Epilepsy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Fibromyalgia in Men
  • Harmony
  • Homelessness
  • Leimyosarcoma
  • Lupus
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Mesh Survivor
  • Mucolididoses
  • Neuropathy Awareness
  • No Unattended kids in Cars
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Pancreatitis
  • Religious Tolerance
  • Rett Syndrome
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Sjorgren's Syndrome
  • Thyroid Cancer
  • Victims of 9/11

So the next time you see the Mid Hudson Bridge lit up in purple, know that it's for a great cause.

We're just not exactly sure exactly which great cause it is.
