A Hudson Valley driver had the commute from hell on Wednesday.

WPDH traffic reporter Nancy Reamy says a driver on Route 202 near Pomona lost control of their car, hitting a fire hydrant early Wednesday morning. After the fire hydrant broke, water began spewing out from the ground which started an unusual chain reaction.

It seems that the flow of water from the broken hydrant caused a sinkhole under the driver's car, swallowing the vehicle and driver.

The accident shut down Route 202 in both directions causing major backups and delays. As of 9am the car was still in the sinkhole with traffic at a standstill in the area.

Delays were expected to last through the morning as crews worked to recover the vehicle and secure the area.

Sinkholes aren't all that uncommon in the Hudson Valley. Last winter a driver steered their car into a pre-existing sinkhole in Ramapo, while another hole swallowed a car in Albany over the summer.
