A local cemetery has been added to the New York State Haunted History Trail. There are more than 14,000 people buried in Port Jervis's Laurel Grove Cemetery and many suspect some of those souls are busy haunting the grounds.

The Times Herald Record reports The Port Jervis Community Develpment Agency got the ball rolling on the designation, while a Port Jervis police detective and ghost hunter by the name of Mike Worden, produced evidence to back the claim. Taking that into consideration along with local legend, there was enough evidence for the cemetery to be added to the list.

The cemetery itself is in financial trouble, falling $10,000 short of the annual $25,000 needed for upkeep. Local officials feel this new status could lead to increased tourism to the area. Valerie Maginsky, executive director of the PJCDA foresees tours of the cemetery getting underway in the not-to distant future.

Visitors to Laurel Grove Cemetery can also view the tri-state rock, a landmark stone where New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania come together.
