At a time when unwanted pets need more help than ever, an animal welfare group is now forced to close its doors.

To help lessen the amount of animals affected... they've started a promotion that will hopefully encourage people to adopt.

Pets Alive Westchester has announced through their website that they will be closing for good. For several months last year the animal shelter closed down for repairs to try and correct structural problems with the building. Because the site is located on top of wetlands, the ground underneath the building is shifting and unstable. Fixing the problem, they say, would be too costly on top of the enormous operating costs that Pets Alive Westchester already pays to continue their programs. According to information supplied by the organization, the heating bill alone runs as high as five-figures during the winter.

Pets Alive also runs an 80-acre sanctuary in Middletown. That location will remain open, and is already preparing to take in any animals that are left after the Westchester location closes down.

The process of closing the Westchester sanctuary will take two to three months, and the Pets Alive Middletown location should have space left over for any animals that are not adopted by then. To help lessen the amount of animals affected by the merger, both of the facilities have started a promotion called “Free Love: Name Your Own Price Adoptions". The promotion will hopefully encourage people to adopt now before the shelters are forced to merge.

Pets Alive is a no-kill shelter, and the management has promised that no pets will be euthanized because of the Westchester closing. If you are interested in adopting one of the many animals that need a home, visit the Pets Alive website for more information.
