New Yorkers get a bad rap for being unhappy and rude. But even with the high taxes and cold, snowy winters, are they really that bad?

After all, it isn't just New York City we're talking about. The Empire State covers a lot of area.

Well, the folks at WalletHub have put together the list of America's happiest states and it looks like New York ranks around the middle. Twenty sixth to be exact.

How did WalletHub come up with these findings? They explain their methodology:

In order to determine the happiest states in America, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions: 1) Emotional & Physical Well-Being, 2) Work Environment and 3) Community & Environment.

 

We evaluated these categories using 28 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing maximum happiness.

So, if New York is in the middle, where exactly are the happiest states?

According to WalletHub, Utah has the happiest people in the United States.

Happiest:

  1.  Utah
  2.  Minnesota
  3.  North Dakota
  4.  Hawaii
  5.  Colorado

Least Happy:

  • 47. Arkansas
  • 48. Mississippi
  • 49. Kentucky
  • 50. Alabama
  • 51. West Virginia

Connecticut ranked 17th happiest. New Jersey was #20. Pennsylvania #34.

Remember these the findings from just one website. Take it all with a grain of salt.
