Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump may have won New York, but who actually won the counties of the Hudson Valley?

Almost immediately after polls closed in the New York primary on Tuesday Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were announced as winners. Trump, not surprisingly, dominated his home state after squeezing in a number of rallies last week, including one right here in Dutchess County.

According to the New York Times, Trump easily won Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Putnam and Rockland Counties. Ted Cruz, who has made some not-so-flattering comments about New Yorkers and their values, had a very poor showing; coming in last in every Hudson Valley county with numbers as low as only %1.88 of the vote in nearby Greene County. Trump's support was the biggest in Orange and Putnam counties, where he grabbed 70% of voters.

Although Hillary Clinton won New York, it was Bernie Sanders who won the hearts and votes of some Hudson Valley residents. Sanders, who visited Marist College last week, narrowly won Dutchess with 51.5% of the vote. The Vermont Senator fared better in Ulster with 62.5% over Hillary's 37.5%. Sanders also came out on top in Putnam and Sullivan Counties while Hillary Clinton locked up Orange, Rockland and Westchester with her margin getting wider in the counties closest to Manhattan.
