We've had some wild animal sightings in the Hudson Valley, but a bison crossing the NY State Thruway is a new one.

On Saturday, state police say that four bison escaped from a farm in Ulster County and ran onto the NY State Thruway in Saugerties. The Times Herald Record reports that just after 5pm the bison split into two teams, with two of the animals running northbound on the highway while the other two traveled southbound.

Unlike the chicken, no one asked why the bison crossed the road; they just wanted them off. One can only imagine the confusion drivers felt when looking outside their windows only to see a large bison traveling in the lanes next to them.

Luckily, there were no accidents or injuries reported due to the incident. The story did not have a happy ending for the animals, however. Police say the owner of the bison eventually appeared on scene and was forced to put the animals down.
