How are you celebrating today? Hopefully it's with a nice, juicy cob of corn.

For some reason June 11 is "National Corn on the Cob Day." Various online sources confirm the holiday, but none give a reason or explanation for why it happens in June.

In June, corn is still being planted in most parts of the United States and the only corn available is either imported or of the not-so-fresh variety. It would make much more sense to celebrate the holiday in August, when local corn is abundant.

But who are we to deny anyone a chance to celebrate this important holiday? I grabbed five ears for $2 on my way home today and plan on grilling them up for dinner tonight. But I guess it really doesn't matter whether you boil, roast or grill your corn, as long as you're a part of the celebration.

Just don't eat your corn like this guy... on National Corn on the Cob Day one should savor every last kernel.
