Honor for Fallen Kingston Soldier

A great way to honor a local hero is one step closer to happening.

Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, Kingston told the Daily Freeman that a bill to name part of Route 32 and Route 9W in Ulster County in honor of a fallen soldier from Kingston has passed the state Assembly. Cahill said the bill was approved on Thursday.

Now a portion of Route 32 and Route 9W in Ulster County will be know as the “Private First Class Douglas Cordo Memorial Highway.”

Back in August of 2011 while serving the U.S. Army, Kingston resident Private First Class Douglas Cordo was killed in Zabul, Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated while his unit patrolled the Zabul Province village of Shah Joy. The explosion fatally injured him.

Kevin Cahill did not give a time line as to when the roadway would be renamed but did tell the Freeman that “It’s a tragedy to lose someone so young, Doug was a friend to many and thoroughly loved to make people laugh, especially children.”
