The District Attorney's office in Orange County has announced a guilty plea of criminally negligent homicide in the case of Angelika Graswald. The charges are in connection with the drowning death of her finance Vincent Viafore in April of 2015.

Graswald admitted to the court that she was responsible for removing the plug from his kayak. She also admitted she was aware that the conditions that day were dangerous and she 'deviated from the standard of conduct that a reasonable person would have observed in the situation' and that her actions resulted in Viafore's death. The plug itself was discovered in the center console of the car Graswald was driving at the time.

The sentence for criminally negligent homicide carries a 1 1/3 to 4 year term and will take place on November 1st. She's already spent two years in jail so it's possible that she will go free this fall.

This plea agreement was entered into after extensive consultation with the victim’s family, who understand the reasons for the plea agreement, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

“While no outcome can compensate for the loss of a beloved son, brother, and uncle, this disposition will hopefully bring a measure of closure to the Viafore family,” Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler said. “This plea ensures that the defendant will be held criminally liable for her actions.  By pleading guilty the defendant has acknowledged that Vincent Viafore’s death was not simply a tragic accident, but the result of this defendant’s criminal conduct

The press release reports that Graswald is a legal permanent resident but as a result is eligible for deportation. That will be decided at a later time.
