The Manhattan skyline continue to change.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and other officials broke ground on a new 1,401 foot tall office building one block west of Grand Central Terminal.

ABC 7 reports that the new tower, One Vanderbilt, is part of $220 million improvements to the terminal. It is expected to completed by 2020.

The new office building, transit upgrades at Grand Central and expanded pedestrian space are what I call smart growth. We demanded and secured private investments into important City infrastructure that put hundreds of thousands of straphangers first. This strategy helps to keep our city competitive while improving the lives of New Yorkers.

At 1,401 feet (spire included), One Vanderbilt will dwarf the Empire State Building by almost two hundred feet.

This isn't even the tallest building currently under construction in New York city. When completed in 2019, the Central Park Tower will stand 1,550 feet tall. There's also the new skyscraper on West 57th Street, that will inch out One Vanderbilt at 1,438 feet.

One World Trade Center is the overall tallest at 1,776 feet.
