Green Day’s operatic American Idiot album naturally lent itself to a full-scale musical, but could it keep the same energy through a televised adaptation? We might find out, as Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong says HBO is in early stages of adapting the former Broadway musical.

The 44 year-old musician claimed as much in an interview with NME (Via TVLine), adding that the current phase of script rewrites was the only thing preventing an official production start. By most accounts, Armstrong is also due to reprise his role as “St. Jimmy.”

We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there. I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.

Armstrong first took American Idiot to Broadway in 2010, following the initial album’s 2004 release. The show only ran until 2011 (now rotating over international arrangements), but picked up two Tony Awards and a Grammy. HBO hasn’t formally commented on Armstrong’s words, but would an HBO adaptation be worth watching?

Will anyone resist setting its premiere when September ends?
