Gov. Andrew Cuomo is giving a big boost to the revitalization of the City of Kingston's historic waterfront.

On Monday, the Governor announced 12 new Brownfield Opportunity areas throughout New York State. The designations give run down areas assistance in developing plans for recovery and easier access to state funds and grants. In addition, the areas can also apply for special Brownfield Cleanup Program tax credit incentives.

The Kingston Waterfront was the only area in the Hudson Valley designated as a Brownfield Opportunity Area in Monday's announcement. According to a press release from the Governor's office, the designated area spans 70-acres of the Rondout section of Kingston. The area slated for revitalization includes land adjacent to the Rondout Creek and the Hudson River including "a mix of historic maritime, industrial, retail and residential development."

Plans to improve the Rondout area were assisted by $474,300 in Brownfield Opportunity Area Program grants. Kingston Mayor, Steven T. Noble was enthusiastic about the designation, saying

The industrial history of Kingston, both on the waterfront and in the center of the city, has left some properties compromised and has made the development of these properties more challenging over the years. The Brownfield Opportunity Area Implementation Strategy provides a roadmap for the improvement of some of these properties.
