The deep freeze that has fallen upon the Hudson Valley has caused some schools to delay their opening times and will certainly give commuters some headaches today.

Northbound NYS Thruway traffic was backed up at 6am this morning due to an accident south of the Newburgh exit. WPDH traffic reporter, Nancy Reamy said that all northbound lanes were closed between exits 17 and 18. *Update: as of 6:45 all lanes have been reopened.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the single digits throughout most of this morning's commute. Factoring in the windchill, you can expect it to feel as low as -15 on your way out the door in some areas.

Some schools have already decided to delay start times, giving buses more time to start up and get out on the road. West Point Schools have completely closed today because of the cold weather. Be sure to tune in for the latest updates, or check our active closing and delay database for newly updated information throughout the morning.

The Times Herald Record lists warming stations that have been open for those battling the cold throughout our region. Some will even be serving breakfast and lunch for those looking for an escape from the deep freeze.
