Hudson Valley residents are mourning the death of a former high school swimming star who died during lifeguard tryouts in Cape Cod this weekend.

Jack Jakubek, who graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School in 2012, died Saturday in a swimming accident on Cape Cod. According to a post on the Monroe Woodbury School District's website, Jakubek was a star member of the high school swim team who continued his swimming career at SUNY Cortland.

ABC News reports that Jakubek drowned during lifeguard tryouts near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The 22-year-old was taking a fitness test to be a lifeguard in Orleans, Massachusetts. Authorities say he went missing while trying to swim to a buoy at around 9am on Saturday

Jakubek was found off shore by divers about 20 minutes later. Efforts to revive the former swimming captain were unsuccessful, according to the fire department. Monroe-Woodbury schools have alerted parents that they will have counselors available when students and staff members return on Tuesday.
