New toys from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" go on sale this Friday, but fans may be excited to hear that some local stores have mistakenly stocked their shelves early.

It's called "Force Friday" and it happens September 4. Stores across the globe will open their doors to rabid "Star Wars" fans clamoring to be among the first to own action figures and vehicles from the new film.

Some stores in the Hudson Valley, however, didn't seem to get the memo. Two days before "Force Friday" action figures and other toys were already out on shelves. On a quick visit to K-Mart in Poughkeepsie I decided to see if any old toys were on clearance to make way for the new ones expected this weekend. My jaw dropped when I found a wall filled with figures from Episode VII.

Poe, Finn, the mysterious Kylo Ren, a "Flame Trooper" and more were all there for the taking. Of course, I gathered up as many as I could fit in my arms and raced for the register. It seemed too good to be true.

Sadly, it was too good to be true. After scanning the first figure the computer blared a huge BEEP and a warning flashed across the screen saying that the purchase was invalid. The cashier was confused and even tried to override the warning, but it wasn't meant to be. I was thwarted by the K-Mart computer network which refused to allow any of the toys to leave the store regardless if they were out on the shelves or not.

A tour of some other local stores brought similar results. Walgreens on Route 44 had Episode IV coloring books and sticker pads for sale, but once they were rung up I was told that they could not be sold until Friday.

This shopping excursion began to turn into a quest. "Would I be able to find any store that would sell me items from "The Force Awakens" before Friday?" I decided to visit the K-Mart at the South Hills Mall to see if perhaps their manager wasn't as big of a "rule follower" as the other one was. While I was unable to find any new figures, I did see some other toys on the shelves that were part of Friday's release including a cool-looking land speeder.

The rest of my journey turned up similar items, but none of the stores I visited would allow toys from the new film to be sold. Apologetic cashiers across the Hudson Valley all told me that they were sorry the items were put out too soon, but I would have to come back this weekend to purchase them.

So for now, it looks like Kylo Ren will have to stay where he is until Friday, peeking out from his perch on the shelf.

Of course, we didn't try every store in the Hudson Valley, so if you got lucky and were able to purchase something early let us know. We'd love to hear your story.
