Bet this burglar wasn't expecting to see this.

A single mother and her two young sons thwarted a break-in at their home with a little help from a samurai sword.

The youngest son, 11 year-old Reese Ward, heard a knock at their door Tuesday. He asked who it was as he laid the sword down near the door, just in case. That's when he could see the bandana and hoodie that were covering the intruder's face.

Uh oh.

As the family dog began barking and carrying on, the robber then tried to kick the door in. That's when the mom from Battle Creek, Michigan intervened.

Mother Sara Ward, a registered nurse, said:

Your first instinct is to fight back and protect yourself, protect your family. So I started pushing back against the door and screaming 'get out, get out.' And at that time he came over to help me. And so he and I were holding the door.

What must have been terrifying for the family was that this person got their arm through the busted door and even pepper sprayed them. Fortunately, the family said it was an old can and that it didn't work.

Older son, 14 year-old Skyler joined in at this point. He grabbed the sword.

So I ran, grabbed the sword and ran at the guy as fast as I could with full intention of doing as much damage to him as possible. When I swung through the door, he got scared.

Fox 17 says that police were notified but were unable to track the fleeing suspect. While

While sword definitely helped this family, but Sara said she isn't taking any more chances. Ward told Fox she bought a gun.
