For generations, freshmen cadets or "plebes" have gone through a very tough summer of training as they begin their studies on the campus of the United States Military Academy in West Point.

To mark the end of summer, the freshmen blow off some of that built up energy with a pillow fight outside their dorms. This year turned bloody. The New York Times reports that 30 cadets were injured, 24 of them with concussions and some with split lips.  One cadet had a broken leg and a dislocated shoulder.

The incident took place on August 20th and was mentioned on social media, but the event was not confirmed by the USMA until it was reported to The Times on Thursday.

Allegedly some of the pillows contained hard objects which were thought to be helmets. Investigations are currently underway by the school, so far no cadets have been punished, and the academy has no plans to end the annual tradition.  Video of the pillow fight can be seen below.
