Dennis Byrd, the ex-pro football player who defied doctors' expectations when he was able to walk again after suffering a horrific on-field injury, has died.

The former Jet died Saturday evening when a car went into his lane, as he was driving outside of Claremore, Oklahoma, striking his vehicle.

He had just celebrated his fiftieth birthday ten days ago.

Byrd broke his C-5 vertebra during a game in November 1992 after colliding with teammate Scott Mersereau. Many thought he would be paralyzed for life and never walk again.

After years of surgery and painful rehab, Bryd beats the odds. He would eventually walk again. He always knew he would even when the experts said he wouldn't.

New York  Jets Owner Woody Johnson said in a statement late Saturday

We are all devastated by the untimely loss of Dennis Byrd. Soft-spoken and strong-willed, the inspiration he provided to all not only by his play on the field but from the way he overcame life's obstacles was remarkable by any measure.

Bryd's #90 jersey was retired by the New York Jets during a special half time ceremony October 28, 2012.

He leaves behind his wife and four kids. RIP Dennis Byrd. Your bravery and courage has inspired many.
